The original Batarang with grappling hook attached to line.

Batarangs are throwing weapons used by Bruce Wayne as Batman. They can also be used as a grappling hook when attached to a line.

History

Batman

The original Batarang with a grappling hook attached to a line was used by Batman to hurl at a thug named Nick and pulled him over.

Batman later abandoned using this Batarang and opted to instead use his spring-action reel as his gadget.[1]

Batman Returns

During a fight against the Red Triangle Gang, Batman used a Super-Batarang against them. It is stolen by the dog of the female gang member and later used by Penguin to fame Batman for the Ice Princess' murder.[2]

Batman '89

During his first encounter with the Joker Gang, Batman made use of an explosive Batarang to detach the Giant Penny to provide cover against their gunfire.[3]

Schumacher timeline variations

Batarang

A large Batarang from Batman's current set of weapons.

Batman Forever

Batman takes a Batarang from his weapons arsenal before he went on to confront Two-Face at the Second Bank of Gotham.

During a fight with Two-Face's thugs he uses one with a rope which catches one of the thugs and ties him up.

Later he used a Sonar Batarang to destroy Riddler's Box during the climax of the film.[4]

Batman & Robin

Batman again takes a Batarang from his weapons arsenal. Only it is a new one different from his previous set of weapons. He isn't shown using the weapon.

Batgirl later uses one with a rope to leap across long distances. Robin uses his Throwing-Birds which are similar to the Batarangs. He used one to also leap across long distances like Batgirl's.[5]

Behind the Scenes

In Sam Hamm original screenplays, Batman hurled ordinary Batarangs at thugs on regular basis. In the actual films it was only used once in the scene where Michael Keaton first appears.
